What trailer should I buy?
In car hauling there are two types of trailers, they are, Open and Enclosed.
Open Trailers
Open trailers are pretty self explanatory. They are the trailers that you most commonly see being driven on the highway. They can haul anywhere from 1 car (this is your classic flatbed trailer) and can go up to 12 cars (these are the wedge trailers you often see).
Open trailers have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that a large majority of cars being transported are for an open trailer. The disadvantage to this is that brokers pay less since the supply is much higher than the demand.
Open trailers are easier to load at times and can even be loaded via a forklift. The price per mile can be very different depending on the type of vehicle that is being transported. For example a brand new Honda Civic can pay less money than Honda Civic from 2000 that has been in an accident and is inoperable.
Enclosed Trailers
These trailers are used for transportation of high end vehicles. They are used by car haulers that have experience in handling expensive cars such as Lamborghini and Ferrari. They require the car hauler to pay attention to detail and to offer the client a “white glove” service. Enclosed trailers can hold anywhere from 1 car to 12 cars.
Enclosed trailers have advantages and disadvantages. The major advantage of an enclosed trailer is that shipments pay more money due to the “special” trailer that needs to be used. That being said, the disadvantage is that there is a low supply of enclosed shipments, so it’s harder to find a car.
Keep in mind that there are two types of enclosed trailers; hard enclosed and soft enclosed. The majority of brokers will want to work with you if you use a hard-enclosed trailer because it protects the car better. Just something to remember when looking for a trailer.

What truck should I buy?
You’ve figured out what type of trailer you want to start hauling cars with? Great! Now you’re going to have to pick a truck to haul the trailer.
The truck you buy to haul cars depends entirely on the type of trailer that you have purchased. If you have a 12 car wedge trailer then you will clearly need to be buy a semi. If you have a 1-3 car trailer, you can use a dually truck such as a Ford F-350 and above.
Car haulers that have trailers with up to 3 cars can be hauled by a dually. We recommend something like a Ford F-350 Super Duty and above. Anything less than that just doesn’t have the power to haul cars.
What’s my operating cost?
Now that you’ve chosen a truck and trailer you can start to break down the numbers to figure out what your operating cost is per mile. This is the best way to find out if your truck hauling operation will be in the green or in the red. This is a do or die calculation that needs to be made. Not calculating your trucks cost per mile will be very costly in the long run and can lead to your company failing. You need to know as a car transporter how much money you need to have coming in per car so that you’ll be able to keep your company afloat.
Take into account that you’ll have to register an MC Number and a DOT number. You’ll also need to contact an insurance company to make sure you have cargo insurance for the cars you’ll be hauling too. You’ll have other fixed costs such as a monthly fee for Central Dispatch, which is the load board for car haulers.
